PCOS has a new name
This is a big moment in women’s health and one I felt I shouldn’t miss the opportunity to write about. Over a year ago I wrote a post all about PCOS. I started that one by sharing: around 1 in 10 women of reproductive age have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) yet up to 70% remain undiagnosed. The previous (poor) naming may at least be partly to blame for the fact that it goes so regularly undiagnosed.
The new name is PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), which much more accurately represents the condition as a broader hormonal and metabolic condition (blood sugar balance). You don’t in fact need to have any cysts on your ovaries to be diagnosed with the condition!
I’ve also spoken extensively in this newsletter about the link between blood sugar balance and hormonal health. PMOS represents just how much our hormones and blood sugar are linked. If you’d like to read more about how to reverse PMOS through diet and behavioral changes have a look at least year’s post.
Warm regards,
Donelle
